Tube Weaning

Reflect, Restore, Reclaim, a no-pressure tube weaning pathway with guided tube feed reductions.

Tube Weaning

Tube weaning is usually the best fit if

  • Your baby is medically stable right now, and there isn’t an upcoming procedure or immediate post-op recovery window that needs protecting.
  • Your baby’s growth is stable enough to begin reductions (including a BMI that is not in a severely underweight range).
  • Safe swallowing is not a current concern, and your baby is able to manage oral feeding safely and effectively.
  • Your baby has some current oral practice — even if volumes are small or inconsistent — and there is an established pattern of accepting feeds by mouth (bottle, cup, or solids depending on age and ability).
  • Feeding anxiety may still be present and can be relatively strong, but feeding is not consistently impossible. For example, your baby may feed better in a drowsy state or while asleep, showing clear capability even if they don’t always feed happily.
  • Your family feels ready to begin reductions and can protect a calm, no-pressure approach and consistent rhythm while your baby learns hunger and recovery.
  • You have a reasonable window of stability (health, childcare, routine) to commit to the process without needing to stop-start immediately.

If you’re unsure, start with Tube Weaning Groundwork. It gives you the readiness, rhythm, and behavioural scaffolding that tube weaning relies on.

What to expect in Tube Weaning

Tube weaning is where we begin reducing tube feeds in a structured, baby-led way, while protecting trust, safety, and your baby’s relationship with feeding. We continue to Reflect and Restore as we go, because tube weaning is not just about less tube. It’s about helping your baby learn hunger, build skills, and develop confidence in eating by mouth.

It’s important to know that progress is not always linear. Many babies show behavioural progress before volume progress. Early changes often look like increased interest, clearer cues, or calmer engagement with feeding, rather than big numbers straight away.

Depending on your baby’s age and ability, the wean may be bottle led or solids led. We choose the approach that matches your baby, not a generic template.

What you'll receive

A personalised tube weaning plan that includes:

  • A clear reduction strategy for tube feeds, tailored to your baby’s medical picture, current intake, and pattern across 24 hours
  • A feeding rhythm designed to support hunger and recovery without pressure
  • Detailed guidance on oral feeding approach (bottle, cup, or solids) based on age and skills
  • Behaviour and cue interpretation so you know exactly when to offer, when to pause, and how to respond without accidental pressure
  • Practical support around feeding technique, equipment, positioning, environment, and who feeds
  • Ongoing adjustments based on your baby’s response, so you’re not left trying to problem-solve alone
  • Clear check-in expectations, so you know what data matters (and what doesn’t), and what we’re looking for at each stage

What you need to be prepared for

Tube weaning can feel emotionally intense, not because it’s wrong, but because it’s a transition for everyone. Being prepared helps you stay steady when things feel a little wobbly.

  • Hunger can look messy at first. Some babies feel it strongly before they know how to respond with eating.
  • Early intake can be inconsistent. A better day followed by a quieter day is common.
  • You may see temporary changes in sleep, mood, or stool patterns as your baby’s body adjusts.
  • Weight can fluctuate. We monitor it with perspective and clear safety parameters — without turning feeding into a numbers chase.
  • The biggest work is protecting a no-pressure feeding environment, even when you feel anxious. That’s often what changes outcomes long-term.

Sometimes we need to pause or slow down. Illness, medical changes, or weight concerns can all shift the pace, and in those moments we protect stability first. A pause doesn’t mean your baby can’t do this or that you have failed, and it doesn’t mean the story ends here. It usually means their body needs a little more time before we continue.

While success rates are high, outcomes can’t be guaranteed, and refunds aren’t offered for unsuccessful weans or safety-led pauses. If you feel ready to restart, additional support can be added so we can pick the plan back up.
