Solids Groundwork

A clear, no-pressure pathway for solid feeding — protecting your baby’s relationship with food, building confident, baby-led skills at their pace, always rooted in trust.

Solids Groundwork

A calm, baby-led start to solids — protecting long-term trust, skills, and variety.

Solids Groundwork is usually the best fit if

  • Your baby is in the early solids window (roughly 6-18 months) and you want a clear, baby-led approach that keeps feeding calm, responsive, and genuinely no-pressure.
  • You’re starting solids later than expected due to medical complexity, tube feeding, or a longer feeding journey – and you want to build foundations without rushing or “making up for lost time.”
  • You want practical guidance on what’s typical at this stage, including routine, timing, and how milk and solids fit together without turning food into a numbers game.
  • You can feel old habits creeping in – pressure, worry, “just one more bite,” or using solids to chase calories – and you want to reset early before it becomes a pattern.
  • Milk intake still feels high, and you suspect it may be blunting appetite for meals.
  • Your baby is showing early feeding anxiety around solids (for example, resisting the feeding position, becoming upset at the highchair, refusing the spoon, or feeling tense before the meal even begins).
  • You feel stuck or unsure what to do next, and you want a clear plan that supports variety, confidence, and long-term mealtime ease.
  • You want support introducing cups (when to start, what to use, and how to build confidence with drinking alongside solids).
  • If your baby is within this early solids stage – including babies starting later due to tube feeding or medical history – this is the right place to begin.
  • If your child is older (around 18 months+) and mealtimes have become more entrenched or selective, Picky Eating Support is usually the better fit.

What to expect in Solids Groundwork (6-18 months)

Solids Groundwork is about teaching you how to offer food in a way that protects your baby’s autonomy, cues, and trust while still giving you clear structure and realistic expectations.

We reflect on what feeding has looked like so far (including any medical or tube-feeding history, pressure points, and what your baby has learned about eating), then we restore a calmer, baby-led solids rhythm with practical guidance you can actually follow. Over time, that’s what helps families reclaim mealtimes that feel steadier, more relaxed, and more varied. We focus on the day-to-day practicalities (what to offer, how often, how to set up meals) and the behavioural foundations that reduce pressure and support long-term variety. This isn’t about getting your baby to “eat more.” It’s about building the skills, routines, and emotional safety that make eating easier over time – especially for babies with a complex feeding history or a later start to solids.

What you'll receive

A personalised solids groundwork plan that includes:

  • A clear starting-solids approach tailored to your baby’s age, developmental stage, and feeding history
  • Practical guidance on milk feeds and solids so you’re not accidentally blunting appetite or turning solids into a calorie chase
  • A baby-led, no-pressure framework for meals: how to offer, how to respond, and what to do when your baby says “no”
  • Food progression guidance: textures, variety, allergens, and how to build exposures without overwhelm
  • Highchair and positioning support to reduce tension and support comfort and control
  • Spoon, self-feeding, and cue guidance (including what’s normal refusal vs what needs a strategy shift)
  • Cup guidance: when to introduce, what type to use, and how to build drinking confidence without stress
  • Ongoing adjustments based on your baby’s response, so you feel steady rather than second-guessing

What you need to be prepared for

Starting solids can bring up a surprising amount of emotion, especially if feeding has been stressful in the past.

  • Progress can look like tolerance and curiosity before it looks like intake.
  • Many babies resist spoons or the feeding position at times — it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong, but it does mean we want to respond carefully so it doesn’t become a learned battle.
  • Some days your baby will eat more, some days less. We keep the long view and protect the relationship with food.
  • The goal is not to prevent picky eating through perfection but to build strong foundations: repeated exposure, calm boundaries, and trust.

Support included

  • Initial online consultation (60–90 minutes) to assess your baby’s current feeding picture and agree clear next steps.
  • A personal Nourished Pathway plan for solids, including practical guidance on routine, responsive boundaries, textures, skills, and cup drinking (matched to your baby’s age and stage).
  • Responses are provided Monday–Friday within 9am–6pm UK time (weekends off) for any essential scheduling or clarification around your plan delivery.
  • Continued support can be added if you’d like more hand-holding as you implement the plan.
